The history of China spans several millennia across a wide geographical area. Each region now considered part of the Chinese world has experienced periods of unity, fracture, prosperity, and strife. Chinese history can be viewed through the dynastic cycles: imperial dynasties rise and fall, and are ascribed certain achievements. Thus, Chinese civilization can be traced as an unbroken thread many thousands of years into the past, making it one of the cradles of civilization. Part I of the Study Discussion Group will start with the Dynastic eras of ancient China and go through the dynasties of Imperial China, up to the Ming Dynasty (1638 -1644). Part II will start with the last dynasty (Qing – 1644-1912) and trace the decline of Imperial China and the rise of modern China, up to the present. For Part I, pick a dynasty and tell us about its rise and fall, as well as its impact on Chinese history. You can also pick a notable personality such as Confucius, Laozi and Sun Tzu, and tell us about their influence on this fascinating country.
