The Motown recording company, founded by Barry Gordy Jr. in Detroit Michigan in January 1959, became one of the most successful Black-owned businesses and one of the most influential independent record companies in American history, giving its name to the hugely popular style of soul music that it created. During the 1960s Motown became one of the reigning presences in American popular music, along with the Beatles. Gordy assembled an array of talented local people at 2648 West Grand Boulevard, destined to become the most famous address in Detroit. This two-story house became the home of “Hitsville,” with Motown’s roster including several successful solo acts, such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, as well as several young singing groups, including the Supremes.
